Nellie Wu, Founder
Motherhood and Making
Hi and welcome!
I’m Nellie and I’ve been making all my life. I was born and raised in New York City and come from a family of entrepreneurs and folks with a lot of “can-do” spirit.
I love working with my hands! After having my first child, with limited time and a need for an outlet to de-stress, I discovered the world of sewing and quilting. I joined a quilting guild. Signed up for private sewing and quilting lessons and threw myself headlong into the world of handmade. I even started a local sewing group. Through all this, I discovered the transformative power of making and community. Not only did I build up my own skills and confidence, I developed so many wonderful friendships and a network of peers, my tribe.
I am always looking to grow my skills and learn new techniques and as a working mom, I found it hard to commit to multi-session classes and regularly scheduled meetups. I yearned for a place to drop in and gather with other makers and hit the ground running with a project. After many years of searching and many nights of dreaming, I decided to create it myself, hence the birth of Craft Common!
Community and a Space for Making
Craft Common was founded on my love of community sewing and making.
I started Craft Common to introduce new sewists to tools and techniques to help them grow their skills as well as, provide a place for sewists of all levels to gather, share, and work. The studio is equipped with six Pfaff Smarter 260C sewing machines– great for beginners and advanced sewists alike. The studio is also outfitted with a large cutting table and ironing station. We are also equipped with many general sewing notions (rotary cutters, rulers, scissors, snips, seam rippers, etc.) for use while in the studio.
At this time, we are not offering any retail sales of fabric or notions. We will be selling books, patterns, and kits in conjunction with workshops (check each workshop’s supply lists for details).
I hope that you’ll come visit us soon and stay a while… perhaps you make a new friend or fall in love with a new craft!
